What is Jadau work?
Jadau is a traditional Indian setting technique in which each stone is pressed by hand into softened metal and seated over a thin sheet of gold-coloured foil, rather than being held by claws or glued into place. The foil sits behind the stone and bounces light back through it, which is why a Jadau piece glows from within instead of only sparkling on the surface. It is slower work than ordinary setting, and it is why the pattern on this pair is not perfectly uniform.

What is the difference between Jadau and Kundan?
They belong to the same family and are often used together, as here. Kundan refers to the refined metal strip used to hold a stone in its seat; Jadau refers to the wider technique of embedding stones into the metal by hand over foil. A piece described as Jadau Kundan uses both. Neither term says anything about the metal being precious — ours is an alloy with an antique gold-toned finish.

Are the pearls real?
No. These are imitation pearls, chosen for their lustre and even shape. Hema Collections is an imitation jewellery brand and we do not make natural or cultured pearl claims on any piece.

Are the red stones real rubies?
No. They are coloured stones set in the Jadau technique, not mined gemstones. The craft is genuine; the stones are imitation, and we would rather say so plainly.

How long are they, and are they heavy?
About 3 inch, which is a proper long dangler, with a pearl fringe at the base. A pair that size has real presence and you will feel them on the ear — that is the trade-off for the drama. If you usually wear small earrings, it is worth knowing before you order.

How do they fasten?
Push back.

What should I wear them with?
Deep red, maroon, ivory, cream and gold all take them. Because the finish is antique gold rather than bright gold, they sit better against a silk or a Banarasi than against a high-shine fabric. Wear your hair up or to one side — a 3 inch earring with a pearl fringe is wasted behind hair.

Can I wear these as a bride?
Yes. Chandbali in antique gold with a pearl fringe is traditional bridal styling, and at this length they hold their own against a heavy lehenga. If you are the bride, keep the maang tikka simple so the two do not compete.

Will it tarnish?
With heavy or repeated wear, the finish will dull — imitation jewellery made in India is not anti-tarnish, and we would rather tell you than promise otherwise. Put it on last and take it off first, keep it away from water, sweat and perfume, wipe it with a soft dry cloth and store it sealed. Our pieces are made for weddings and festive occasions rather than routine wear.
